Sustainable Initiatives in Rancho Cucamonga: A Community Effort

Rancho Cucamonga is making significant strides in environmental sustainability, with various initiatives aimed at reducing waste, conserving resources, and promoting green practices.

Inland Empire Regional Composting Facility

Located at 12645 6th Street, the Inland Empire Regional Composting Facility (IERCF) is the nation’s largest indoor biosolids composting facility. Established in 2007 through a Joint Powers Agreement between the Inland Empire Utilities Agency and the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, the IERCF processes over 200,000 wet tons of biosolids annually. The facility produces more than 230,000 cubic yards of high-quality compost each year, marketed as SoilPro® Premium Compost, which enhances soil quality and water retention for local landscaping and horticultural use.

City’s Environmental Programs

The City of Rancho Cucamonga’s Environmental Programs section manages various waste diversion initiatives, including residential recycling, green waste programs, and stormwater pollution prevention. Residents are encouraged to participate in recycling and proper disposal practices to minimize environmental impact. For instance, the city offers bulky item removal services and provides guidelines on what can be placed in green waste containers, such as leaves, grass clippings, and small branches.

Green Business Recognition Program

To promote sustainable business practices, Rancho Cucamonga has established the Green Business Recognition Program. This initiative acknowledges businesses that demonstrate a commitment to environmental sustainability. Evolution Fresh, a local food manufacturing plant, joined the program by implementing measures like diverting organic waste to farms, conserving water, and enhancing energy efficiency through LED lighting retrofits.

Community Participation

Residents and businesses are encouraged to engage in these sustainability efforts. By participating in recycling programs, utilizing composting facilities, and supporting green businesses, the community can collectively contribute to a healthier and more sustainable Rancho Cucamonga.
